SHIVA NATARAJA
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Aum Namaḥ Śivāya
This archetypal mantra removes all the obstacles and suffering and gives eternal beauty and immortality.
It symbolizes the victory of Śiva Nataraja over Tripura, the devil's corpse, thanks to his wild dance, tandava.
Śiva Nataraja is dancing on the eternal present and the purpose of his dance is to release the souls of all men, jiva, from the snare of illusion, avidya.
"The one who is performing japa with this mantra is becoming free from the prison of the wheel of births and deaths", this is reported on Veda and Śivā Agamas.
Namaḥ means to humble. Namaḥ Śivāya means devotion to Lord Śiva. Namaḥ is the individual soul. Śiva represents the collective souls.
Aya stands for the identity of the two different souls: the individual and the collective ones blended together.
It is the centre of the universe the place where this never-ending and eternal amalgam is taking place.
The centre of the universe is metaphorically the centre of the man, the heart as inner nature.
The gestures of Śiva Nataraja are connected with the five sillabes of mantra and
coincide with the five elements and the five actions of the Lord Śiva.
In the five-syllable mantra Namaḥ Śivāya:
Na is the proiection power of Lord Śiva that is starting the wheel of the world.
It is the lower left hand that is bearing the Lord of Fire, Agni.
maḥ is the tie that is binding the sould of the world with the wheel of birth and death.
It is the foot that is squeezing the devil Tripura
Śi is the symbol of Lord Śiva. It is the drum, damaru, hold by the upper right hand.
It symbolizes creation.
vā is all that is moving towards to the Lord of the Dance. It the abhaya-mudra, the protection mudra; it is the ground foot, the incarnation of jiva;
it is the upper foot, the individual souls salvation.
"Have a bath or clean your hands, your face and your feet. Take a rudraksha, the mala of Śiva
and sit in padmāsana east or north direction. Stay calm in a relaxing place.
Repeat silently the mantra of Lord Śiva and meditate upon the mental image of the Lord of Dance. Try to keep the image in the hearth or in the third eye place.
At the beginning it could be helpful for you to write down the mantra Aum Namaḥ Śivāya on a clean and pretty notebook.
Stay in silence and try not to loose concentration. When the note book is full keep it as a jewel inside a box in your meditation room"
